An electric car on a long-stay parking lot: charging, frost, battery level
An electric car sits out a trip differently: nothing depends on the starter, everything depends on how much energy is left after two weeks and whether it covers the drive home.
A charger on the lot is a paid service, not part of the site
The usual assumption goes like this: a lot that takes cars for a fortnight surely has a socket somewhere. Usually it does not. A charging point costs the operator money and occupies ground that cannot be sold to anyone else while it stands there, so it appears where somebody worked out that it would pay for itself.
Charging near an airport is therefore a line in the price list, next to a wash, winter care or help with bags, and you tick it deliberately while booking. If the lot does not show that line, you will not find the socket on arrival either.
Before you tick it, ask two things. The first is output, because an ordinary socket and a fast charger are two quite different services, and over a week the slower one is more than enough. The second is who handles the cable: does somebody plug it in and unplug it, or is the car meant to stand connected for the whole stay.
The question is not pedantry. Where there is a single bay, staff move cars around so that everyone who paid gets a turn, and somebody then needs to get inside. Where the key stays with you, that rotation simply cannot happen and the service works another way.
Your own cable travels with you, or stays in the car only if the operator asks for it. A cable lying in the boot for two weeks bothers nobody; a cable plugged into the bay, on a car nobody can move, blocks that bay for everyone else.
What battery level to leave the car at
The rule is simple and runs against instinct: leave the battery neither full nor empty. Aim for roughly the middle of the range, with a little extra on top if you are coming back in the middle of winter.
A full cell spends the fortnight held at a voltage nobody designed it to sit at for that long. One trip will not hurt it, but that state ages the pack faster than ordinary driving does, so there is no reason to hold it there for nothing.
An empty battery is worse, and the risk is immediate. The car keeps drawing energy for its own electronics, and falling below the bottom limit can damage the pack for good and leave the vehicle stranded until a workshop looks at it.
Half the range leaves you a margin in both directions. There is room for the standing loss, room for a cold morning on the day you return, and room for the drive out of the airport even if the first charger on the route turns out to be busy or broken.
If you reach the lot straight off a long motorway run and the gauge reads considerably more, do not go looking for a way to run the car down before your flight. Across two weeks that difference is theoretical. It starts to matter only when you are leaving the car for a month or longer.
Frost and heat only show up when you get back
A battery dislikes extremes, and standing still makes that plainer than daily driving does. In frost the chemistry slows down, so the range reading on your return can be lower than it was on the day you left, even though nobody has moved the car.
A good part of that drop is apparent rather than real, and it comes back with the temperature. The pack has not given the energy away, it is just managing it worse for the moment; after a few miles, once it warms through, the reading usually climbs on its own.
The rest of the drop is real, and it comes from the car looking after itself. In a hard frost some models heat the battery so it does not fall below a safe temperature, and they do that out of whatever charge is left.
Heat works more slowly but in the same direction. A hot pack may be cooled actively, and a car standing on open ground in July gets hotter than the air temperature of the day would suggest.
This is where paying for a roof or a hall earns its place with this kind of car in particular. Temperature swings are smaller there and the pack gets a quieter fortnight. Choosing between open ground, a canopy and a hall is settled by a separate text in the guide.
Standby modes, cameras and what the app does
A modern electric car does not sleep as deeply as it seems to. Watching the surroundings on camera, staying connected to the network and waking for every request from your phone cost energy measured in percent per week, not in fractions of a percent.
Before you fly, switch off the feature that records what happens around the car. On a fenced lot with its own cameras it adds little, and it is the most expensive of the standby functions. A few frames taken on your phone before you walk away are worth more after damage than footage nobody will ever open.
Turn the schedules off as well. A cabin set to warm up at seven in the morning, or a car set to be ready for departure, will run that routine every single day of the stay while you are a thousand miles away.
Checking the app does no harm as long as you are not doing it out of boredom a dozen times a day. Every refresh wakes the car, and a woken pack keeps drawing current for a while after you close the screen.
A lot where you hand the car over at the terminal is a separate matter. Somebody there has to open it, start it and move it, so say up front what opens it and whether a card or a key is enough without a phone signed in to your account. A car that cannot be moved without your own app is a problem for the lot.
The drive home is planned before you fly
Plan the last leg before departure, not after landing. Work out calmly how far the lot is from home and how much of that the battery covers under the worst weather that could plausibly turn up on the day you return.
If it comes out tight, pick one charger on the route in advance and keep a second in reserve. You will be tired, often arriving at night, with bags in your hands; that is the worst possible moment to be hunting for a free bay on a phone, in the rain, beside a slip road.
If the lot sells charging, tick it while booking and agree when the car should be ready. Ordering it after you land rarely helps, because filling a pack takes longer than collecting your bags and getting across to the parking.
In winter, start the cabin heating from the app only once you know you have the margin. A warm interior costs range, and in a car defrosted from its own battery that cost comes straight out of what you were going to drive home on.
The rest of the return looks like any other car: a walk around it, a glance at the condition, a calm exit from the lot. After two weeks an electric car asks for nothing more, as long as you left it at a sensible state of charge with the features that eat it switched off.
